Managing your finances may seem like an overwhelming task. However, if you break it up into smaller sections, it becomes much easier.

There are four key areas that you should look at when first organizing your finances. These areas are: security, stability, growth and management.

Within each area you will find goals that you need to work towards. You can't successfully manage your finances by simply looking at one area. They are all necessary.

Security is the area in which you prepare for the unexpected. This is where you insurance comes into play. Many people have great retirement savings, little debt, but no insurance. They are financially vulnerable.

Life insurance, health insurance, auto insurance, homeowner's insurance and disability insurance all protect your from life's accidents and emergencies. Each type of policy is important.

Start by pulling all of your policies together and reveiw them to make sure that you have enough coverage. If you don't, make it right. Depending on the amount of time you want to devote to this, you can even do some shopping around for new policies. Make a list of your basic policy information and the contact numbers. Keep this information in your safe deposit box in case of a home disaster.

If you can afford to purchase disability insurance you should. Most young people have a greater chance of becoming disabled than dying. Research this type of insurance and decide what is right for you.

If you own anything, even just a vehicle and nothing else, you must have a will. You need to have a will that states what happens to your money and your children if something happens to you. If you don't have a will, this decision will be made by a court appointed official.

A will doesn't have to be extensive, in many states you can simply use a premade form purchased from an office supply store. Make sure you check to see if your state has any requirements when it comes to wills and trusts.

Having a will isn't enough. If you already have one, you need to read it and update it every year. There are many changes in life, and you need to keep your will updated. You don't want the state deciding who gets what and where you things go. And you don't want to put your family through any uncertainty about what you would have wanted.

Now to the money part of security. It is vital that you have an emergency fund. Most advisors recommend having between three and six months of expenses in savings. I know this takes a while, but it is worth it. It will prepare you for any financial disasters you may face, from layoffs to car repair bills. It frees your budget from the unexpected. You are able to repair what needs repairing and pay what needs paid without worry. Make saving into an emergency fund a priority.

Hopefully, your security won't ever need to be called on. But if it is, you will be financial sound by having it in place. It is important to protect what you work so hard for.

Many commentators have written articles recommending people spend less and "tighten their belts" - and whilst this is essentially good advice, it provides very little consolation for those people struggling with debt. 3. Don't go to the supermarket hungry - you're more likely to by impulse items

4. Shop at discount supermarkets - food retail is getting more competitive and that means cheaper prices

It's time too to review the household budget and eliminate any excess, unnecessary costs and make some cutbacks such. For instance:

1. Quit smoking

2. Cancel the gym membership if you don't use it

3. Use public transport more to save petrol

4. Take you lunch to work

5. Cook more at home and don't buy as much take away

Rule # 1: Don't Waste Your Money ...

One of the things I learned early on in my home business journey was that you can not afford to waste money. Money can be spent on so many different and useful tools, information, etc. Being the guy from Australia, I quickly learned that many of my business partners were based in the United States or other places overseas. Now, to use our normal telephone provider would mean very expensive calls at long distant rates. That would equate to hundreds , if not thousands of dollars spent in training calls, conferences, and relationship building calls.

I learned of Skype early on also. I used them for a short period too. The huge problem with Skype is that their service in Australia for Computer to phone is extremely bad. I was constantly repeating myself and I guess the professional look that I wanted to portray flew right out the window! Cheap calls, Extremely bad reception. Note: this is probably the result for people in Australia. Skype users in Europe most probably get great reception. Computer to computer calls - Skype is perfect.

VOIP and what is it all about ...

One of my mentors told me about VOIP. Voip is basically the ability to make calls using broadband Internet. You can plug in a soft phone, which is like a microphone with headset (but its shaped like a phone), and plug it straight into your USB port on your home computer. This enables you to make calls from your computer, when your computer is on. You can also receive calls from your computer.

I experimented with this technology and was glad I did. I was spending about 10 cents on unlimited calls all over Australia and many countries overseas (USA, NZ, UK, Europe). However, I wanted better. I wanted to be able to receive calls and make calls with my computer turned off. Wow, was I asking for the moon here? I wanted all of this and possibly a rate even cheaper than the 10 cents I was paying per call and 22 cents per mobile phone call/minute.

Technology is an amazing thing. Keeping up to date with it is even better.

I discovered many voip deals on the market in Australia. Many were advertising plans. An example of this is where the company may charge you a monthly fee of $20 or $25 to use their voip phone service. Beware! There is definitely no need to pay for a service provider with voip. In my experience you should not pay a monthly fee unless it is extremely low and you get some crazy bonuses. Otherwise - it's a trap in order to get your money. Remember, you want to save money in order to spend it on worth while business productivity.

Like all things - Research is Key

I done my due diligence on whirlpool.net.au and discovered that there were prepay voip services. You pay only for the calls you make. That sounded like what I wanted! Actually there were pages of voip providers. I also realized that I would need different appliances in order to use voip without my computer on. Hmm, it was going to be a bit of a mess ....

...until I found out that there are modems where all you need to do is plug in your phone and Internet connection - and that's it! No messy, mucking around with wires and other devices. A simple voip modem which enabled the use of voip. So, I chose a Voip service provider which charges me 8cents for unlimited calls across Australia, USA, Europe, UK, NZ, and heaps of other countries. Mobiles are at 12 cents per minute and 50 FREE SMS messages which I can send from my computer!

The quality is great and I am saving a truck load of money each month. I love it so much that I no longer use our 'normal' telephone exchange provider for the calls I make. I just rent the phone line and make all of my phone calls via Voip.

Conferencing with Voip? You better believe it!

Voip is essential for business success if you intend to make overseas calls and do so regularly. It is also much cheaper than local calls - so it benefits you in that area too. I checked out the USA, and their voip services are even cheaper than Australia's. There are literally hundreds of voip providers out there. Many have also adapted voip into their conferences. You see, phone conferencing is slowly dying out. Other services which ask you to dial a number on your phone for audio conferencing and then go to your Internet to view the conference - is STUPID!

Why am I so harsh here? Simple, many overseas business owners are sick and tired of not feeling like part of the team. Many have to dial an international number at international rates (...not if you have voip...). What a pain!

What I see happening in the NOW and future are conference calls on the Internet utilizing voip. That way local and international clients or business customers can just type in a URL and assist on the call - FREE of Charge. Many companies have this service at ridiculously high prices. However they know that it is the wave of the future. Think of how better your MLM team or your Network Marketing Team would function if you could have a world wide training call where your business partners and prospects didn't have to pay a cent to attend! Where you could share files, have a whiteboard to demonstrate key concepts, web cam so the team could build rapport... the benefits are endless.

What is an AVC Pension?

AVC stands for 'additional voluntary contribution' and allows you to make supplementary contributions to your employers pension scheme. The scheme rules will stipulate how much you are able to contribute to the main scheme for example 6% of your earnings you may need to increase the amount you save towards your pension to do this you use a AVC Pension Fund.
Broadly most AVC funds are administered by a pension provider for example the Teachers Pension Scheme use Prudential to administer its AVC contributions.

Advantages of AVC Funds.

The main advantages of using AVC's are cost. All AVC schemes are group arrangements so the costs of running and administering the AVC scheme are shared and reduced for each individual member. You can also change your contributions to suit your circumstances and select a range of funds that the provider allows you to invest in and of course your receive tax relief on your contributions.

Tax Relief and AVC Funds.

AVC's are taken from your pay before tax and qualify for tax relief in the same way as your main pension scheme. In terms of contributions your are only limited by the 'Annual Allowance' in 2008/09 235,000 it should be noted you will only receive tax relief on 100% of your earnings.

Taking Benefits form your AVC Fund.

You can convert your AVC pension fund between the ages of 50 and 75 and take the benefits without taking your main scheme. Post A Day pension changes allows you to release 25% tax free cash lump sum and purchase an annuity (pension income) however you do have the option of deferring the annuity and using an income draw down plan.

The Denver Real Estate Market - Ahead of the Curve

With all the doom and gloom news about the real estate market around the country, it's important to realize that buyers are still buying homes! For the Denver CO real estate market, out of every nine listings in October, one sold. This is just slightly better than the rate of sold homes in September. With the glut of homes on the market, Denver represents a great opportunity for investors and those with good credit along with a hefty down payment.

The tightening mortgage market is starting to affect the market in Denver, though. Prices have dropped as sellers realize fewer qualified buyers are looking for homes. Some sellers are pulling their homes off the market, hoping to hold out for a turn around in the market. Will this turn around happen anytime soon? It's too hard to tell.

Fewer homes were on the market in Denver for October. The number of homes sold did increase a bit in October, but these sellers had to lower their prices by nearly four percent. Q1: As an introduction, can you give us a broad brush description of the hedge fund universe?

The hedge fund industry consists of around 6,000 funds globally, and manages around $900 billion in assets. Many hedge funds are relatively young (less than five years old) and relatively small (less than $25 million under management), which emphasises the fact that hedge funds have only recently become popular with more mainstream investors.

Q2: We understand that the hedge fund market is no longer the special province of US-based operators, and that other areas notably Asia and Europe have seen amazing growth in terms of asset size and startups over the last five years. How has this happened?

This is primarily a matter of supply and demand. With strong investor demand and no signs of fees coming down, it simply makes a lot of sense for experienced portfolio managers, proprietary traders, marketer, etc, to start up a hedge fund operation. With an average fee of 2 per cent flat plus 20 per cent of the profit, these people can do a lot better on their own than working for a large bank or asset manager, even if they manage to raise only $100 million or so.

Q3: Given the sort of exponential growth weve been talking about, is there a likelihood that returns will be driven down as hedge funds are flooded with capital? After all, it is the role of managers and arbitrageurs to normalise and provide liquidity to the marketplace?

It is clear that the heydays of hedge funds are a thing of the past every succeeding year having shown a worse performance than the previous one. Much depends on the specific strategy followed, though. Global macro funds will probably last longest, as many of them operate in liquid markets. More specialised funds, such as convertible arbitrage, are already suffering. There just arent enough convertibles in the world to support the assets under management by this type of funds.

Q4: Is it fair to say that the European theatre is best suited to the single-manager fund operation?

No. Most European investors use funds of funds, that is multi-manager funds. For investors who do not have the necessary skills to select funds themselves, who do not have the size to allow them to select their own funds, or who just do not want to take the responsibility for fund selection (as is often the case with institutional investors), funds of funds are basically the only available alternative.

Q5: In relation to single-manager funds, the funds manager has total trading authority. It has been inferred that using a single manager can lead to a lack of diversification and higher risk. From an empirical point of view, do these inferences have any validity?

Yes. Individual hedge funds have a high degree of idiosyncratic risk because you are basically building on the ideas of just one or two people. In addition, about 15 per cent of all hedge funds closes every year, because of lack of size or lack of performance. This makes it is almost a necessity to hold a portfolio of funds instead of a single fund.

Q6: With thousands of hedge funds to choose from, each claiming to have an edge, where does the novice investor start?

The novice investor should not try to do the fund selection him- or herself. The whole due diligence process and the portfolio building that comes afterwards is just far too complex for DIY.

Q7: Pension funds and hedge funds will the twain ever meet?

Yes, because pension funds tend to imitate each other. If the big ones go for hedge funds, the smaller ones will follow. With interest rates at a historical low, uncertainty about the future of the stock market, and institutional investors eagerly looking for something to make up for recent losses (or to be seen doing at least something), hedge funds have been welcomed with open arms by the top pension funds. It is only a matter of time before many smaller funds follow suit. The only thing that can prevent this is lack of performance. Hedge funds need to convince pension funds that they are worth the hassle and the relatively high fees. If performance stays out, however, the hedge fund idea will become harder and harder to sell.

Q8: How are investments in hedge funds affected by current market conditions?

Much of the interest in hedge funds is driven by a lack of alternatives. Many investors do not know where to put their money and are struggling to recover from serious losses in the stock market. They are therefore very much open to alternatives at the moment. It is exactly at that point that hedge fund marketers start knocking on your door. What do you expect?

- Periodontitis

It is very common among Shih Tzu and all dogs to have gum disease. At the age of two or three, many dogs have either periodontitis or gingivitis.

Why does everyone "ooh" and "ahh" over pictures of cute little babies? Capturing that absolute cuteness is difficult; but when you do catch it, it is irresistible. We are fascinated with baby pictures for several reasons and there are tricks to capturing that fascination on film.

Because they can't really help themselves, babies draw our instinctual interest in their adorableness (even though some people think newborns are actually not that cute). Mother Nature built in a warm and fuzzy feeling for cute, helpless babies so that those infants would survive babyhood. So, a baby's cuteness actually has a purpose.

Artists will explain that the eyes have it. Babies' eyes are large in proportion to their bodies. The eyes do not grow after we are born, so the adult-sized eyes in such a small face draw our attention. You can see that this is true by comparing your eyes with an infant's eyes. You will find that they are almost the same size.

The lack of proportion between the eyes and face make painting a baby difficult for the artist, but it is that very disproportion that is instinctually cute. Cartoon artists are aware of this as you can see by the cute disproportioned cartoon characters that have become so popular. Many of these cartoons have overly wide, large eyes compared to the rest of their body. The most popular will most closely recreate the proportions of an infant's face.

Now, how do you capture that cuteness on film without being a professional? First, you must be patient. Since babies don't really care if the lighting was perfect or the background was just right, we have to wait to capture that perfect moment when the baby is ready to cooperate.

When you are ready to snap a picture, make sure that you focus on a close-up of the baby's face. Too much of the surroundings will detract from the baby's innate cuteness by drawing the attention away from the face.

Some infants will become a challenge when you try to coerce a smile from them; others will be camera hounds. It helps if you know what motivates the baby. With favorite toys, faces, and sounds, you can work to elicit that happy reaction while someone else actually takes the picture. It may take several tries to get just the right shot, but that adorable baby photo that results will be well worth the effort.

Summers here and its a perfect time of year to pack up the car for a cross-country tour or for a ride to a nearby vacation destination. When traveling by car with young children, the greatest challenges are managing the amount of gear that you have to pack and determining what activities will keep your children busy in a confined space.

As moms, weve all experienced the day to day challenges of packing up the car and ensuring we are equipped to handle any situation that presents itself while we are away from home. Think of your road trips as an extension of what you do with your children each day. Take advantage of your experience and insight to simplify your packing and planning. Pack the basics, throw in a few surprises and of course, plan for the unexpected.

Shhhh....if you're in Texas, watch your mouth or you could be arrested. No, I'm not talking about yelling fire in a public place or threatening someone. I'm talking about having a private conversation in a private home about a private matter. Whatever you do, don't tell anyone in Texas how to use a sexual aide. If someone has a beef against you, you could be talking to an undercover officer.

Passion parties...sort of like Tupperware parties for the bedroom....have become increasingly popular over the last few years. It's what some women do on girl's night out. It is also a side income for many people. Law-abiding folks engage in this, much the same way as folks bet on office pools. Yet, like betting, it can turn the average citizen into a criminal.

That's what retired schoolteacher, Joanne Webb, found out when she tried to supplement her family's income through passion parties. Seattle School Librarian Honored

There was a group of children in one of the Seattle schools who came up with an idea. They wanted to turn sad things into happy things, find the positive in the negative. The idea came about because when you are in the third or fourth grade, life can be sweet one moment, stale candy the next. One of the girls in the group, Amy, who just turned 11, had a beloved pet bunny named Roger who died. The loss still smarts.Through their informal club, Amy and her school pals -- Jasmine, Chloe, Hailey, Annie, Madi and Naomi -- would try to turn frowns upside down. The only question was how.

The children thought about it. They decided that books would become their tool for making a difference. School had deepened their love of books. They respected the power of words on the printed page -- no small feat in a television age. Books could offer stories with powerful messages, they knew, and such messages could inspire. The girls asked people in their neighborhoods as well as the parents of classmates to donate toasters, baby toys and whatever they could for a big garage sale the first week of June. They raised $400.

The girls bought 36 books. They already had a home for them inside their elementary school library, where one wall features a poster from the 1963 March on Washington and another bears a photo of the late Coretta Scott King. Inspired by a school librarian, they worked as a team toward a goal.

It is easy to miss such learning that occurs regularly in the public schools. Budget woes, school closures and scandals involving high school hoops teams tend to make for juicier headlines. The book club is one of those quiet stories that would have remained in the dark had something bad not happened. These were books -- along with "Peter and the Starcatchers" and others -- that Cooper had on her wish list.

Her wish came true thanks to Amy, Jasmine, Chloe, Hailey, Annie, Madi and Naomi -- along with everyone who pitched in to help these Decatur students. After the unthinkable happened, the girls got together. They crafted designs for a bookplate that will go inside each of the new books before school starts. The plate has a sun in one corner, a moon in another. It shows an open book with its front and back covers in view. One cover says "Mary" and the other says "Cooper." Down the spine are three words: "In Memory Of. Such a worthy tribute is one way a group of dedicated children is forging lasting good out of a lingering horror.
